Product Safety

Unfortunately, there are many appliances and other products used in and around the home that for any number of reasons, are found to be unsafe after they have been in use. These problems usually come to light after enough consumers have reported problems with the product.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has a website that continually updates those products and appliances that have been recalled due to safety hazards associated with a product. If the home you are considering purchasing will include appliances, it behooves you to know if any of those appliances have been recalled.

During the home inspection, we urge you to write down the manufacturer and model number for those appliances and then go to the CPSC website to see if any of the appliances are listed as being recalled. This site will also give you directions as to what needs to be done to make the appliance safe for use. It is then up to you to decided if you want the seller to take the appropriate steps to fix the appliance or if you want to request a reduction in the selling price because of the defective appliance.
